Argentinian Specialities
Confiterías
These are classical family restaurants spread all over the city, offering delicious food called minutas, simple traditional Argentinian recipes such as pasta, milanesas, steak, sandwiches, coffee, pastries, etc. Nothing fancy or elaborate, just good food.
Heladerías
(Ice-Cream Shops)
Again, they are everywhere, and they are all good. Argentinians have perfected their Italian ancestors’ recipe, and added a million more flavors, it’s very hard to pick 2 or 3 out of so many enticing choices. A few recommended spots: Freddo, Persico, Rapanui, Lucciano’s, Volta…
Kioskos:
You’ll also see them every block or so. They are like mini 7-elevens, but nicer and with better choices of candies, alfajores and a myriad of other treats. The dream place of every child (and adult). They have been a staple for Argentinians for generations. They’ve only become bigger with time. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like them anywhere else.

Panaderías (Bakeries):
Bakeries are my favorite eating spots in Argentina. I think there is one per block in certain neighborhoods, and they are all incredible, serving fresh pastries, bread and sandwiches at all times of day. I never miss an opportunity to have a bite in one of my favorite ones: Dos Escudos, Las Esclavas, Luis XVI… There are so many, these are just a few in my immediate radius. When you go, make sure to try: sandwichitos de miga (there are tons of flavors and combinations to choose from), empanadas (you know those), facturas (my favorites are the vigilantes con crema pastelera, ojos de lechuza, sacramentos and the medialunas de grasa y de manteca), locatellis (turkey and tomato mini-croissant sandwich), milanesa sándwich, tartas (similar to a quiche but less greasy, they are more similar to a French soufflé. In terms of flavors, there are a ton and they are all good, but zapallito (round zucchini), puerro (leek) and calabaza (squash) are my favorites. I could go on, but you are probably overwhelmed by now.
I know it’s a lot to try with such little time, but honestly, anything you order will be fantastic, fattening and delicious. Better even than the boulangeries in Paris!!!
